A guide to surveillance solutions suited for hazardous areas
Synectics surveillance solutions have been deployed as part of safety and security operations at the Tempa Rossa onshore development in southern Italy.
The $1.9bn Tempa Rossa project – a joint development between Total and Shell – located in the Sauro valley will comprise eight production wells, a new oil processing centre, an LPG storage centre (with associated loading points) and updated utilities/distribution infrastructure.
At full operational capacity it is anticipated that the site will produce 50,000 barrels of oil, 230,000 cubic metres of natural gas, 240 tons of LPG, and 80 tons of sulphur per day.
The end-to-end solution developed and delivered as a partnership project between Synectics and Thales in Italy incorporates Synergy command and control platform and over 80 COEX camera stations (fixed and PTZ) with access control, intruder detection systems, and integrated control and safety systems.
The collaboration means that Tempa Rossa operators will benefit from heightened levels of situational awareness spanning all aspects of process, security and safety.
The surveillance brief also required full integrated Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) prior to deployment.
“The solution proposed by Synectics technically and financially met all of Total’s requirements for this interesting and high profile project, but in this case, the task wasn’t purely about specification. We also needed a partner that would work with us to enable full integration testing offsite prior to installation."
Marco Ficozzi, R&D department, Thales Italy
Marco continued: "In addition to testing the solution in its own dedicated FAT facility, Synectics also created the macros in Synergy necessary to allow us to analyse ‘operation-ready’ integration performance at our Italian site. It’s a partnership that enabled us to deliver the best result for the client.”
The support provided by Synectics for the Tempa Rossa solution ensures that high quality visual data (live or recorded) can always be paired with incident detection alarms in order to investigate and initiate response procedures.
Whether triggered by people or processes, alerts will immediately prioritise image feed from the nearest available cameras. Synergy will also generate scenario specific workflows to guide operators through appropriate protocols.
Amedeo Simonetto, Business Development Director at Synectics, said: “Surveillance briefs within the oil and gas market are always very specific – hazardous conditions, geographic demands (site size, location etc.) and extreme operating temperatures are the norm rather than the exception. We’ve been developing and deploying oil and gas solutions across the globe for over 30 years and know from experience that each project has its own unique challenges and requirements.
“Delivering to exact specifications and working, in partnership, was critical and demonstrates the level of technical expertise and support that Synectics offers. This was certainly the case with Tempa Rossa. Working with Thales we delivered a solution that ensured every aspect of the brief was fulfilled efficiently and effectively.”
